Product Details

Equine serum can be a cost-effective alternative to fetal bovine serum and can be used in a variety of cell culture applications. RMBIO obtains donor horse serum from closed herds that are carefully controlled and inspected by veterinarians. Horses are regularly tested for equine infectious anemia using Coggins tests. Before collection, donor horses are fasted to ensure lower lipid levels. All lots of equine serum are 0.2µm sterile filtered and feature low hemoglobin levels.

  • Gamma irradiated at 25-40kGy
  • Sterility, Endotoxin, and Mycoplasma tested
  • 9CFR tested
  • 0.2µm sterile filtered
  • Low hemoglobin levels
  • Manufactured at our GMP compliant and FDA registered facility

Gamma Irradiation 101
Gamma irradiation is a physical inactivation approach used to achieve pathogen reduction in the serum. This mitigates risk from low-level contaminants that may not be detected through viral or mycoplasma testing. RMBIO serum is gamma irradiated via controlled exposure to Cobalt 60 at an industry standard dose of 25-40kGy. Most typical viral contaminants of equine serum are readily inactivated at this irradiation range. Advantages of gamma irradiation include:

  • No potential for residual contaminants
  • Widely accepted by pharmaceutical and research industries
  • Accepted by regulatory agencies
  • Minimal effect on product performance
  • Effective virus inactivation
